To the detriment of climate activism, permafrost, or frozen soil, has not made its way into the public imagination as an entity in need of protection. A new publicity campaign to raise awareness around permafrost thaw is proposed for Yakutia, Russia, home to Yakutsk, the largest city in the world built on permafrost.
